Jewellery Care
A little care keeps your jewellery looking its best. Check your product page for the exact metal and finish of your piece, then follow the matching section below.
Everyday basics (all pieces)
- Put jewellery on last, take it off first. Apply perfume, lotion, sunscreen and hairspray first and let them dry.
- Take it off before swimming (pools, hot tubs, the sea), showering, exercising, cleaning, gardening, or using hand sanitizer.
- Avoid chemicals: chlorine, bleach, household cleaners and acetone can discolour metal and damage plating.
- Store pieces separately in a soft pouch or a lined box so they don't scratch each other. Fasten chains to prevent tangling.
- Check settings now and then. If a stone feels loose or a prong is bent, stop wearing the piece and contact us — see the warranty section of Returns & Refunds.
925 sterling silver
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver. It naturally darkens (tarnishes) when it reacts with air, moisture and sulfur — this is normal and removable.
- Store it in an airtight bag or an anti-tarnish pouch when you're not wearing it. Wearing silver regularly actually helps slow tarnish.
- Clean with a silver polishing cloth, or with mild soap and lukewarm water and a soft brush; rinse and dry completely.
- If your piece is rhodium-plated (the product page will say so): rhodium is a bright, white surface layer over the silver. Clean it only with mild soap, water and a soft cloth. Don't use silver dips, polishing cloths with compound, or abrasive pastes — they can wear the plating away. Rhodium plating gradually wears with use, especially on rings.
Gold vermeil and gold-plated jewellery
Vermeil and gold-plated pieces have a layer of gold over sterling silver. The layer is durable but will wear gradually with use and friction — how fast depends on how often and how you wear it.
- Keep pieces away from water, sweat, perfume and lotions as much as possible.
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth after wearing.
- Don't polish with silver cloths, jewellery dips or abrasive cleaners — they remove gold.
- Don't use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
- Rings and bracelets get the most friction and will show wear soonest.
Lab-created moissanite
Moissanite is very hard (9.25 on the Mohs scale) and resistant to scratching in everyday wear. Like any stone, it loses sparkle when lotion, soap and skin oils build up on it.
- Clean with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush, paying attention to the back of the stone; rinse and dry.
- Because it's harder than most materials, store moissanite pieces separately so they don't scratch softer jewellery.
- A hard knock can still chip any stone or bend a prong — take rings off for sports and heavy work.
